Dagger Wins State Amateur
It was like a bolt out of the blue. It was also the essence of match play. Clinging to a coque eleven iphone 6 tenuous 1 up lead with just nine holes to play in the climactic match of the 90th California Amateur Championship, Darryl Donovan watched as Travis Johnson lasered his approach shot to within 10 feet of the flagstick on the treacherous, 435 year, par four 10th hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The 41 year old Donovan a former professional who won the 1999 NCGA Amateur Championship shortly after having is amateur status reinstated had lost that 10th hole in the morning portion of the state amateur championship match when he deposited his approach shot into the ocean hazard which lines the entire hole.
“That hole was a huge turning point,” Donovan would say later. “I’m sure he was expecting to get back to all square in the match.” Donovan had other ideaslike draining his 45 foot snake. When Johnson missed his birdie putt, suddenly what looked like an even match had become a 2 up coque samsung a50 sakura lead for Donovan.
“In match play, you have to expect that your opponent is going to sink every putt,” Donovan would later say. But this was a dagger coque rouge pour iphone 5 from which the 20 coque samsung a40 verre de vin year coque samsung a70 kenzo old Johnson a junior at UCLA and the number one player on the Bruin team last year could not recover. He hit over the green on each of the next three holes.
Donovan won the par five 14th after nearly holing a 125 yard pitching wedge approach shot and closed out the match with a birdie on the 15th hole to win 4 3.
In doing so, Donovan became the first Northern Californian to win the state title since Casey Boyns won the second of his two titles in 1993. The victory also capped coque maroc iphone 5 a sterling week for the NCGA iphone 6 coque 3d which saw Jeff Wilson of Suisun win medalist honors, the North team capture the Roger Lapham Challenge Cup (see page 47) and Stockton’s Roly LaMontagne win the CGA Senior Amateur Championship coque champion samsung a40 (Page 48).
Johnson coque samsung a40 protection prepared for the California Amateur by finishing runner up in the Long Beach Match Play Championship the weekend before. After playing 36 holes each on Saturday and Sunday, Johnson faced the usually grueling Cal Am schedule of stroke play rounds Monday and Tuesday, match play rounds Wednesday and Thursday and double rounds Friday and Saturday. For good measure, he also ran three miles each day.
Johnson wasn’t concerned about large number rounds heading into his match against Donovan. “Long Beach got me in the frame of mind for match play,” he said after his lost. “I’m not disappointed. I just ran into a better player today. He outplayed me but I had a great time this week. This is just a stepping stone. The California Amateur is a big event, but I’ve got even bigger goals in my future.”
Donovan knew what he was facing in Johnson. “I had won some tom and jerry logo iphone 5 5s coque cover matches this week without playing my best golf,” said Donovan after he had beaten Johnson. “But I told my caddie that I needed to have my ‘A’ game show up.”
Donovan was 2 down after 17 holes in the morning coque pour iphone 5 fille portion of the event, but cut the margin in half when he won the 18th hole after Johnson plunked his second shot into the ocean.
It turned out to be an omen. Donovan, who had posted five birdies in the morning, made seven birdies in 15 coque iphone 4 superman holes in the afternoon. The only blemish on his afternoon scorecard was a double bogey 5 on the fifth hole. “I usually give a gift or two during each round,” said Donovan later. “that was the only one I gave away this afternoon.”
Donovan missed only one cat meme custom iphone case fairway (the first, when his tee shot was inches into the rough) and one green (the 10th).
Johnson was equally scintillating. He had played masterfully in the morning, making six birdies and an eagle, but in the afternoon his only birdie was on the second hole (which came after he missed a 10 foot eagle putt), while a doubtech coque pour samsung a50 double bogey on the par three 12th and a bogey 6 on the 14th hole ultimately proved to be too big a mountain to climb.
“all of my shots after the 10th hole were hit perfectly,” said Johnson, somewhat perplexed after the match was over. “I wasn’t amped or anything. Maybe I didn’t play the wind correctly, and a couple I just hit too good.”
“The tee shot on No. 12 was a perfect example. When I played that hole the first day, coque samsung a70 dragon ball I hit four iron stiff. The next time, the same club was long. Today, in the morning it was in the front bunker and this afternoon, with the wind in my face, it’s long. I still haven’t figured the hole out.”
Afterwards, lilly pulitzer nermaid iphone 5 5s se coque cover Donovan reflected on his victory, only the second NCGA win the 12 years. It was also the first time since Boyns came back in the afternoon against Joy Ferrari in 1993 that the winner had trained after 18 holes. Open held at Pebble Beach. “I know this is an important win for the NCGA and it was particularly sweet because Jeff Wilson was medalist and the North won the team matches, as well.”
Johnson and Donovan were impressive throughout the tournament.
Donovan was the No. 2 seed after shooting rounds of 72 71 in stroke play (the medalist, Jeff Wilson of Suisun, became the 80th medalist to fail to go on to win the championship).
In match play Donovan dispatched San Diego’s Bryant Reeves, 4 3, in the first rounds, then took out one of last year’s semifinalists, Jim Skinner of Manhattan Beach, 2 1 to reach the quarterfinals where he cruised past 21 year old Jonathan Echols of Hanford, 3 2.
In the semis, Donovan was matched against reigning SCGA Amateur champion Scott McGihon, who had reached the quarters in 1998 only to lose a 20 hole match to the eventual runner up, Bobby Rodger.
McGihon took a 1 up lead on the first hole against Donovan but it would be his last advantage. Donovan squared the match with a par on 3 on the fifth hole and took the lead with a par 5 on the sixth. The usually steady McGihon was off his game; he michigan wolverines 2 iphone 5 5s se coque cover made four bogies against a single birdie in the last 13 holes of the match, while in that same stretch Donovan was even par.
Three times, McGihon squared the match and the margin was never more than one hole until Donovan won the 16th with a par 4 to take a 2 up lead. The back and forth nature of the match was indicated by the face that 10 of the 17 holes were wont by one or the other player.
“I think the reason I lasted this long in the tournament was that I was hitting iphone 6 coque metal my mid irons and short irons all over the flagstick all week,” said McGihon after his loss. “But I just putted mediocre the whole time; the putt I made on 18 in the morning (a seven foot birdie putt to slam the door on William Coleman and give McGihon a 1 up victory) was one of the few crucial putts I made all week; I just never had a good putting stroke, not in stroke play or match play.”
Johnson had matching stroke play rounds of 1 over par 73s at Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach and was the No. 12 seed in match play. He immediately served notice that he would be a force when he defeated last year’s runner up, Troy McKinley, 5 4, the largest margin of any match in this year’s championship.
Johnson then eased by former San Jose State student Ray Otis, 1 up, to set up a quarterfinal match against 23 coque iphone 6 popcorn year old Travis Matye, a former College of the Canyons and Cal State boston celtics icon iphone 6 6s coque cover Bakersfield team member.
It would be a memorable match. Johnson’s opening salvo was birdie eagle for a 2 up lead, only to see Matye rally back and eventually take a 2 up lead after he sank an eight iron shot for an eagle 2 on the 13th hole. He eventually squared the match by reaching the 548 yard, par five 18th hole in two shots and squared the match with a birdie. The match ended coque samsung j3 6 camo the second time they played No. 18 (the second playoff hole) when Johnson again made birdie after reaching the green in two shots.
That set up a semifinal match against 41 year old James Hay, the 2000 NCGA Amateur champion. A former professional, Hay had run his match play record to a gaudy 19 1 since regaining his amateur status in 1999, but the grueling week long schedule finally took its toll…
